چکیده

In this paper we review the current experimental and theoretical situation of the description of non-Fermi liquid behavior (NFL) in U and Ce intermetallics. We focus on the magnetic and thermodynamic properties. We also discuss a recent theoretical interpretation of this behavior in terms of Griffiths-McCoy singularities close to the magnetic quantum critical point (QCP). We show how an effective Hamiltonian which contains both the RKKY coupling and the Kondo interaction can be written after high energy degrees of freedom away from the Fermi surface are traced out. We argue that dissipation due to particle-hole excitations close to the Fermi surface is a relevant perturbation at low temperatures and we estimate the crossover temperature T ∗ above which power law behavior in specific heat and magnetic response occurs (CV /T ∼ χ(T ) ∝ T−1+λ with λ < 1). Below T ∗ a new regime dominated by dissipation is found and deviations from power law behavior are expected.

Fermi- and non-Fermi-liquid behavior in the anisotropic multichannel Kondo model: Bethe Ansatz solution.

We solve the Multichannel Kondo model with channel anisotropy using the Bethe Ansatz method. The model generates energy scales, characterizing the neighborhoods of the various infrared fixed points, reflecting the structure of the symmetry breaking in the channel sector. The nature of these fixed points also depends on the magnitude of the impurity spin S. We present a detailed discussion for t...

Crossover between Fermi liquid and non-Fermi liquid behavior in the non-centrosymmetric compound Yb2Ni12P7.

A crossover from a non-Fermi liquid to a Fermi liquid phase in Yb2Ni12P7 is observed by analyzing electrical resistivity ρ(T), magnetic susceptibility χ(T), specific heat C(T), and thermoelectric power S(T) measurements. The electronic contribution to specific heat, Ce(T), behaves as Ce(T)/T∼-ln(T) for 5 K<T<15 K, which is consistent with non-Fermi liquid behavior. Below T∼4 K, the upturn in Ce...

Unusual single-ion non-fermi-liquid behavior in Ce(1-x)LaxNi9Ge4.

We report on specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and resistivity measurements on the compound Ce(1-x)LaxNi9Ge4 for various concentrations ranging from the stoichiometric system with x = 0 to the dilute limit x = 0.95. Our data reveal single-ion scaling with the Ce concentration and the largest ever recorded value of the electronic specific heat Deltac/T approximately 5.5 J K-2 mol(-1) at T ...

Quantum critical scaling at the edge of Fermi liquid stability in a cuprate superconductor.

In the high-temperature cuprate superconductors, the pervasiveness of anomalous electronic transport properties suggests that violation of conventional Fermi liquid behavior is closely tied to superconductivity. In other classes of unconventional superconductors, atypical transport is well correlated with proximity to a quantum critical point, but the relative importance of quantum criticality ...

Non - Fermi Liquid Behavior in U and Ce Alloys : Criticality , Disorder , Dissipation , and Griffiths - McCoy singularities

In this paper we provide the theoretical basis for the problem of GriffithsMcCoy singularities close to the quantum critical point for magnetic ordering in U and Ce intermetallics. We show that the competition between Kondo effect and RKKY interaction can be expressed in Hamiltonian form and the dilution effect due to alloying leads to a quantum percolation problem driven by the number of magne...
